VERTICAL ARTICULATION JOINTS

All construction materials will expand or contract when the ambient temperature changes.

Due to this, masonry will move, if you do not taken into account the following thing space for expansion,
If not cracks will appear.

To prevent this, expansion joints are provided at strategic points.

An articulation joint is a vertical gap which allows for minor footing movement. It prevents build up of
pressure and cracking of the wall.

Expansion joints must be carefully designed, depending on whether it is for a load bearing or non-load
bearing application.

There are different types of movement joints used in buildings.

They Are:

* Expansion joints
* Control joints
* Building expansion joints
* Construction joints

Each of these types of movement joints has a specific purpose, and they should not be used as
interchangeably joints.

EXPANSION JOINTS:

An expansion joint is used to segment brick masonry to prevent cracking.

However, the expansion joint, while accommodating movement, should also resist water penetration as
well as air infiltration.

Suitable expansion joints must be provided to suit the estimated magnitude of movement in that location.

Clay based products expand permanently as time goes on, whereas cement based products shrink permanently.

Due to these contrary characteristics, it is best to avoid the use of clay and cement in the same area. If clay bricks are laid in concrete framed buildings, then control joints have to be carefully planned.

When expansion joints are located in brick walls, then mortar or joint reinforcement materials should not bridge the gap, as they will restrict expansion of the gap.

Careful attention should be paid to such details and therefore workmanship is also of importance.

Shoddy workmanship in such a place will almost certainly show up as cracks in the course of time.

The location of expansion joints should be such that it does not affect the structural integrity of the building.

VERTICAL ARTICULATION JOINTS:

Articulation joints are vertical expansion joints.

They are provided in a building to prevent pressure build-up and cracking.

Vertical articulation joints are needed if the building is located on reactive clay soils.

It is not needed if the building is on a stable site.

The generally accepted values for coefficient of moisture expansion for clay masonry is 0.0005 in/in/deg
F and coefficient for thermal expansion is 0.000004 in/in/deg F.

The distance between the articulation joints can be calculated by using these values.

The actual placement of articulation joints in a structure depends on the estimated amount of movement as well as building configuration.

Adequate articulation joints must be provided within long walls.

They should also be provided at corners, openings, offsets, wall intersections, walls of different heights and parapets.

These are areas which have a tendency to move, thereby causing cracks.

Places That Are Prone To Cracks Are:

* Corners
* Offsets and setbacks
* Openings
* Intersections and junctions
* Parapets

Expansion joints are formed using pre-molded foam pad or neoprene pad.

A backer strip is provided behind the pad.

The outside is sealed using an appropriate sealant.

This prevents the ingress of water as well as air infiltration.

Though the distance between articulation joints can be calculated using the appropriate formulae, at times economics overrides engineering practice and a calculated risk is taken.

Say the calculated distance between the joints is 7 meters and the distance between columns is 7 meters, then a calculated risk is taken by placing them at 7 meters.

CONTROL JOINTS:

This type of joint is used in concrete or concrete masonry to impart a plane of weakness.

It is used in conjunction with reinforcements/joint reinforcements that controls the formation of cracks, due
to thermal expansion of the building.

A control joint is usually a vertical opening which passes through the concrete masonry wythe.

It is usually made of inelastic materials. The location of a control joint is carefully selected so that the
structural integrity is unaffected.

BUILDING EXPANSION JOINTS:

This type of joint is used to separate the entire building into sections.

By doing so, if stresses are developed in one section, then the structural integrity of the other sections
remains unaffected.

The building joint and its location has to be carefully selected.

CONSTRUCTION JOINTS:

This type of jointing is used wherever concrete construction is interrupted.

It helps the structure absorb thermal expansion, but will be located where the strength of the structure will
be least affected.

Of All The Construction Joints Used Vertical Articulated Joints
Are One Of The Most Common Used
.

They help to relieve any stress buildup on a home and prevent cracks; which can mar the aesthetic looks
of the building.
